1 Peter 2:1-5; 9-10 (VOICE)
So get rid of hatefulness and deception, of insincerity and jealousy and slander. 2 Be like newborn babies, crying out for spiritual milk that will help you grow into salvation 3 if you have tasted and found the Lord to be good.
4 Come to Him—the living stone—who was rejected by people but accepted by God as chosen and precious. 5 Like living stones, let yourselves be assembled into a spiritual house, a holy order of priests who offer up spiritual sacrifices that will be acceptable to God through Jesus the Anointed.
9 But you are a chosen people, set aside to be a royal order of priests, a holy nation, God’s own; so that you may proclaim the wondrous acts of the One who called you out of inky darkness into shimmering light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received it.
If we have found that the Lord is good, scripture tells us, we need to respond to his goodness by living into the call to be his chosen people. The order of these events is of critical importance.
We don’t become God’s chosen people after we ‘earn’ it with right actions and/or correct beliefs. There isn’t some line in the sand that we have to get across, where we have done enough. Our good deeds aren’t being counted up towards an imagined heavenly quota.
Instead, through the grace, love, and power of Jesus Christ – the cornerstone of our faith and our salvation – we have been claimed as the chosen people of God. That is who we are, not because of anything we have done, will do, or could do. Rather, we are the chosen people of God because that is who Jesus has claimed and called us to be.
The actions Jesus is calling us to: getting rid of hatefulness and deception; riding our hearts and lives of jealousy; keeping harsh language and hurtful words out of our minds and hearts. These things are all done in response to what God has already done for us.
Jesus has sanctified us and justified us by his precious blood, he has claimed us as his sisters and brothers in the family of God. Through his life, death, and resurrection we have become the chosen people of God.
Now, our response and our responsibility is to live into what we have already been called. To become in word, in thought and in deed, what Christ has already claimed us to be. Jesus Christ has made for us a way out of the ‘inky darkness’ that we all have been trapped in. We have been made children of the light in his image, all that is left for us is to start to act like it.
Sharing God’s Love,
Prayer: Lord, claim us as your own. Lift us out of the darkness of our lives and our hearts and fill us with your light and love. Help us to live into the lives that you have claimed for us and to become the royal priesthood of your love – sharing your light with others so that all may see. Amen.
