Children’s Ministry
Highland Presbyterian Church has a strong commitment to the growth, education and spiritual nourishment of our children. It is through the children that we see the future – not only of this church family, but Christ’s Church as well. As we minister to our children, we always keep in mind the words found in Proverb 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart form it.” Christ loves our children and calls upon each of us to extend that love, remembering that our children are our greatest legacy.

Nursery (Birth – Kindergarden)
The Children’s Ministry of Highland provides a nursery program during Sunday School and Sunday Worship Services (8:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.). The purpose of our nursery program is to minister to families of small children. Our nurseries are staffed by paid and volunteer workers who want to share God’s love with our children and their parents. If you have questions about the nursery program, call Alecia Paschal, Director of Highland Learning Center (910-485-2591). Children 2 and up are grouped according to their age as of October 15th.

Jesus said, “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:4)
Extended Church
Following the Children’s Sermon each Sunday, children ages 3 to 7 years are dismissed to Extended Church for Godly Play in the Highland Learning Center.
Acolytes for Worship
Starting in the second grade children may participate in the Worship Service by lighting the candles on the altar. This is a special opportunity for the children of our church to participate in the life of the church.
FUNdamentals of Worship
Changes are underway for our FUNdamentals of Worship class. Until we put the finishing touches on our plan, 2nd graders will return to their seats with their parents after the Children’s Moment. Parents of 2nd graders should look for information regarding FUNdamentals of Worship to arrive in your homes in early October. We think you’ll be pleased with the changes.
Children’s Sermons
We believe that sermons are an essential part of the church’s ministry, especially for children. Each Sunday, we invite the children to move forward to the Chancel steps for “their message.” Our hope is that these are more than simple object lessons, but illustrate that God’s love is exciting and real and that children have a significant part in the sharing of that love.
Cherub Choir – Wednesdays
We think there is nothing sweeter than little ones singing praises to God! Each Wednesday, Mrs. Connie meets with 4 year olds at 5:30pm in the Children’s Choir room for Cherub Choir. The children learn songs that they will share in worship services throughout the year. Following Cherub Choir, the children are escorted to room 133 in the Learning Center by their parents.
Children’s Chimes – Wednesdays, 4:30-5:00pm
All children are invited to participate in playing choir chimes. Children’s chimes are designed to prepare children for ringing handbells and will help them learn basics of reading music. They ring occasionaly for worship and the Wednesday evening fellowship time.
Junior Bells – Wednesdays, 5:00pm – 5:30pm
This group teaches the basics of playing handbells and reading music, while having fun with games and projects. They play occasionally for worship and special events.
TrebleMakers – Wednesdays 5:45pm-7:00pm
All of the children of Highland, Kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to join the fun of singing with the Highland TrebleMakers! During the school year they rehearse in a carefully coordinated schedule of various activities as part of our Wednesday Night program. The children sing regularly for the 11:00 Sunday Worship Services, special services and present a musical each spring. TrebleMakers meet on Wednesdays for practice.
Catechism – Wednesdays
The Catechism program has a longstanding history here at Highland, and one of which we are quite proud! Fifth and sixth graders who haven’t already done so participate in this program that teaches the basics of our Christian beliefs and is an integral part of our Christian Education Curriculum. It prepares them as they move towards church membership and a profession of faith. This year, Catechism will meet on Wednesdays at 4:00pm-5:00pm. Children who are eligible for this class will receive more detailed information on the class.
